Bhubaneswar: A group of miscreants thrashed an elderly couple in front of their younger son and elder daughter-in-law and tied them all before decamping with jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh along with Rs one lakh cash and six mobile phones.

Such an incident has occured in Kanan Vihar Phase 2 area under Chandrasekharpur Police Station limits in Bhubaneswar on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Reportedly at around 2.30 AM last night, about 12-15 armed miscreants had entered the house of one Amit Das by breaking open the window grill. They first entered Amit's room, tied him and looted the valuables kept in an almirah.

Gradually, the miscreants dragged all the family members, including Amit's parents, sister-in-law and her 5-months-old child, out of their rooms and tied them. They even thrashed Amit's parents and snatched the keys of the locker, where jewellery had been stored, from his mother.

The ordeal continued for almost three hours. It was at around 5 AM on Wednesday that the miscreants left the house with the looted valuables. Later, Amit managed to free himself and rushed to the nearest police station to lodge a complaint.

Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahoo informed that a case has been registered at Chandrasekharpur police station and scientific team along with dog squad had also visited the spot. Police is trying to collect CCTV footages from the area and also examining details of the items looted.
