Bhubaneswar: Since the advent of digital age and the world-wide web, a human being’s essentials from ‘roti, kapda aur makaan’ have changed to ‘mobile, internet and social media’. Pratap Subudhi of Jagannath Basti has realized this well. While the city struggles for electricity and water supply, Pratap understood that people craved connectivity more. After the Cyclone’s landfall on May 3, he embarked on journey with a diesel generator and 25 mobile cables to help capital city denizens fill up charge in their mobile phones.

While several opportunists are charging Rs 2000 per hour to pump water into tanks of the houses, Pratap offers his services for free. His day starts at 6 am in the morning. He wakes up, takes a bath, gets dressed and leaves for the day.

Explaining his modus operandi, he said, “When people of locality summon me, I go to that place. On the way if someone stops me at Master Canteen or Kalpana Chhak for charging their phones, I help them as well. This continues till late night. Once a crowd gathers, I start the generator and connect the phones. 25 phones can be charged, at once. I don’t move till every electronic device does not have 100% charge.”

Pratap’s life too has been devastated by the Cyclone. “My house has been shattered by FANI, but everyone has the same problems and troubles. When I reach my slum, I see senior citizens and children struggling. So, I connect the generator with fans and lights of some houses in my locality hoping that people can sleep peacefully."

"He truly is a life savior," remarked people as they happily charged their phones and rang up their near and dear ones.
