Mayurbhanj: The Odisha Women Commission chief Dr Minati Behera today visited the family of female teacher here who had committed suicide after the rape allegation that she had made fell on deaf ears.
Dr Behera was accompanied by Women Commission officials Bijaya Barwa and Arabinda Pattanaik, Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police (SP) Smit P. Parmar, and a three-member team for inspection.
They met the victim’s family and assured them they will fight so that their daughter receives justice. They also inspected her hostel room where she had committed suicide. Dr Behera said that a detailed report shall be submitted to the State Government and that whatever steps required will be taken by them.
The victim, Rukmini Mandal was a Physics lecturer at Rairangpur Women’s college and stayed in their hostel. On October 30 she had lodged a complaint alleging rape by her relative at Rairangpur Town Police Station. She hanged herself in her hostel room on December 1. Her family has brought serious allegations against the district police of staying mum on this matter and taking no action.
After the allegation by victim’s family, SP Parmar arrested the main accused and also transferred Jharpokharia IIC Sarat Chandra Mahalik to District Police Headquarters and suspended Investigating Officer (IO) of the case ASI Prasant Kumar Swain.
The case is under investigation.
