Mayurbhanj: Rairangpur Town Police on Sunday registered a murder case in connection with the death of female lecturer Rukmini Mandal who was found hanging last night in the hostel of Rairangpur Women's College in Mayurbhanj district.
Superintendent of Police Smit P. Parmar informed that acting on a complaint of Rukmini's father, Abhimanyu Mandal, a case under Section 302 / 34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Rairangpur Town Police Station.
While there are six accused in the case, three of them including the prime accused Soumyaranjan Sahu have been arrested. Rukmini had on October 30, lodged an FIR under Section 376/506 of IPC at Jharpokharia Police Station where she had levelled rape charges against Soumyaranjan.
It was after Rukmini's family members alleged that she died because of police inaction in the case, SP Parmar transferred Jharpokharia IIC Sarat Chandra Mahalik to District Police Headquarters and suspended Investigating Officer (IO) of the case ASI Prasant Kumar Swain.
Reportedly, Rukmini had visited her cousin brother's house in Keonjhar in October this year when her sister-in-law's brother Soumyaranjan had raped her. Adding to her woes, her cousin brother and his wife also did not support Rukmini. Finally she lodged a complaint with the police but died in wait of justice.
