Malkangiri: Orkel police on Wednesday night raided a group of ganja traffickers in a hilly region of the district. Around 100 ganja traffickers who were apprehended during the raid, were transporting the contraband by moving on foot.

A tussle ensued with the police and the trafficker in which a cop also sustained injuries. He is undergoing treatment at Koraput district headquarters hospital. However, all the traffickers managed to escape in the dead of the night.

Following this incident, Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena placed his team on high alert and a day later, a 75-member team was tasked to raid ganja peddlers in Mathili.

Incidentally, the same group of traffickers was intercepted and the team led by Malkangiri SDPO Rishikesh Khilari arrested 34 persons.

"Out of the arrested persons, 17 are from Malkangiri, 10 are from Nawrangpur, 5 are from Koraput and 1 is from Chhatisgarh. In total, 3305 kg ganja was seized by the police in this case,” Meena said.

In another case under Malkangiri police limits, 500 kg ganja was confiscated by the police on Thursday. Two persons were arrested and a vehicle used for the transportation of the contraband was seized.
