Odisha: Malkangiri Police Seizes 770 Kg Ganja

Malkangiri: Podia police led by Inspector Pravat Kumar Behera on Sunday intercepted a heavy vehicle which was carrying ganja in a huge quantity. On proper inspection, 770 kilograms of ganja was detected and seized from the 12-wheeler truck.

The vehicle was coming from Kalimela and did not stop on the direction of the police officials. The vehicle was caught after a long chase. The driver was trying to escape but nabbed by the cops.

The driver, Suraj Sharma (35) revealed that he was transporting ganja from Surlukunda to Raipur. Sharma is a native of Indore. He was booked under the NDPS Act and remanded in judicial custody.

In 2018, in Malkangiri district a total number of 102 NDPS cases were registered and total 17,118 Kg of contraband Ganja was seized. 179 persons were arrested and 83 vehicles were seized. Out of 179 arrested persons, 89 arrested persons were from outside Odisha.

In continuation of special focus on checking the illegal Ganja trafficking, in 2019, till now, 93 cases have been detected under the NDPS Act. Total of 20,900 Kg of Ganja has been seized. 195 numbers of accused persons have been arrested and 76 numbers of vehicles have been seized. Out of 195 arrested accused persons, 61 are from outside Odisha State, the police stated.
