**Malkangiri:** Following surplus rainfall in the tribal dominated Malkangiri district, the State Commerce and Transport Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi and Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi conducted an aerial survey today to take stock of the damage done by the floods.
This year, Malkangiri has received a surplus 55 per cent rain than normal. Due to this, a flood-like situation occurred at several places of the district. In the aerial survey, the officials visited places like Mathili, Khairput and Chitrakonda, that have been worse affected.
Following the aerial survey, the Minister and SRC held a meeting with Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Tehsildars at District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) conference hall.
Ramesh Majhi explained, “This year, heavy rainfall occurred on July 19 and 20, and then on August 15 and 16. These showers have caused death of three people and huge amount of loss of property and land.”
In his media interaction, Bishnupada Sethi said, “After the survey, we realised some places are still water-logged as the discharge of storm water into Godavari has not happened efficiently. But there will be no problem anywhere as more than 200 people had been evacuated before the heavy showers and shifted to relief centres.”
After releasing the flood water, the 19 roads that had been blocked, have almost been restored, he added.
Giving an estimate of Rs 20 crores worth of damages, Sethi concluded, ”We have requested the district administration to take stock of the situation and let us know all the damages by August 31. Then we will take immediate steps to improve the situation and provide ex-gratia to all the affected people that will be directly sent to their bank accounts.”
