Bhubaneswar: Five Maoists, including two women cadres, were killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel inside a reserve forest near Sanyasiguda village under Kalimela police station of Malkangiri district in the early hours of Monday.

In a major haul, the police recovered 2 SLRs, 1 Insas, a 303 rifle and 179 rounds of ammunition. Two hand grenades, 8 magazines, kitbags, cash and other camp articles were also seized during the combing operation.

Three ultras killed in the encounter have been identified as Unga Sodhi alias Kirti, ACM cadre, Mase Madhi alias Sunni and Seema Kendruka alias Rupi alias Sushila of the Kalimela Dalam. While Kirti and Sunni were residents of Rajulkonda under Kalimela police limits, Sushila was a native of Balipatna in Narayanpatna.

The joint operation was being carried out by the Odisha Special Operations Group and the District Voluntary Force and was led by Malkangiri SP. A combing operation was launched to retrieve the bodies. While three of them have been identified, the identity of two Maoists is yet to be ascertained.
