Cuttack: A major fire broke at the Telephone Bhawan, public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd's (BSNL's) office in Bajrakabati road in Cuttack.
Fire tenders have rushed to the spot and efforts are on to tame the blaze reported in the fourth floor of the building which houses the very vital switch room of the telecom service provider. Electrical short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
The public sector telecom company's service continues to remain affected/disrupted in the Silver city, and its adjoining areas.
"Fire broke out about an hour ago possibly due to electrical short circuit in the switch room," informed a senior official of the BSNL.
When asked about the extent of damage caused due to the fire, the official said that at this point it was difficult to tell and the damage can be properly assessed after the flames are doused.
"Now we are not allowed in the zone where the fire has occured. It's now totally in the control of the Fire department personnel. Our people had attempted to douse the fire using fire extinguishers available with us but they failed," the official said.
He added that there has been no casualty due to the incident.
The official further informed that since fire has occured at the floor that houses the switch room and transmission systems so service has more or less come to halt in Cuttack city and the district as well.
"I appeal to our customers to bear with us till services are restored. Every effort will be made to restore services at the earliest," he said.
"Fire fighting is on. We have asked for more men. Nothing can be said now," said Fire department personnel at the spot.
