Bhubaneswar: Lakhs of devotees thronged the Lingaraj temple here on Monday evening on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri and to witness the raising of 'Mahadipa' atop the shrine. While the much awaited ritual was to be held at 10 pm, it took place half an hour before schedule this year.

All the rituals were conducted in time which resulted in the timely raising of the ceremonial lamp. Heads of three Sevayat Nijogs were present inside the temple to monitor timely conduct of all the rituals. The devotees, who were on a day-long fast, waited patiently for the final ritual to be over after which they broke their fast.

While the temple was beautifully decorated, ‘bhajan samarohs’ were being held since Monday morning and continued overnight. Different religious organisations and institutions organised cultural programmes in the evening to celebrate the festival.

Noted singers Anuradha Paudwal and Anup Jalota mesmerised the crowd with their live performance at the Bhajan Samaroh near Lingaraj Temple.

“It is a very auspicious day for the people of Odisha. We fast and pray the Lord for the well being of the family. We eagerly wait for the ‘Mahadipa darshan’ as devotees break their fast after completion of this ritual,” said Manasi, a devotee.

In view of a large assemblage of devotees at Lingaraj Temple the Commissionerate Police made special traffic and security arrangements to ensure an incident free festival. The temple administration also made special arrangements to ensure smooth and timely conduct of all rituals on the occasion.
