Bhubaneswar: The annual Local Self Government Day was observed across Odisha in a festive manner. Also called ‘Swayat Shasan Dibas’, it signifies that the power of a municipality is actually in the hands of a citizen.
Director of Municipal Administration (DMA)-cum-Mission Director Swachh Bharat Mission and Administrator BMC Sangramjit Nayak hoisted tricolour at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) office to celebrate the Local Self Governance Day for the citizens. Here, he requested all officers, staffs to provide better services to the citizens.
The BMC also inaugurate 15 new parks in and open two new renovated parks across 22 wards here. Along with parks, school, a homeopathy hospital, two community health centres and a kalyan mandap were also set inaugurated as part of several events planned for today’s celebrations.
Not far from Bhubaneswar in its twin city Cuttack, Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab presided over the meeting along with Cuttack-Choudwar MLA Souvik Biswal. Several events have been chalked for the day where a lot of projects across wards will be inaugurated and foundation stone will be laid for several others. These include renovation of ponds, installation of community toilets and Micro Composting Centres, and community health centre amongst other projects.
Swayat Shasan Dibas was celebrated in its own unique way in Rourkela. Municipal Corporator with other employees conducted street corner plays and with use of placards advocated to completely discard use of plastic. Commisioner Yeddula Vijay hoisted national flag at RMC campus and inaugurated a blood donation camp. While there no public utility structure was inaugurated, Mahanagar Nigam’s Social Welfare Department gave Madhu Babu pension to 24 deserving people, Rs 10,000 each to 14 businesses under Chief Minister Relief Fund, financial help under National Family Kalyan Yojana to 11 families, and wheel chairs were provided to four differently abled persons.
At Dhenkanal, Collector Bhumesh Chandra Behera commemorated the celebrations with flag hoisting. Previously, he had garlanded the busts of heroes installed within the municipality. Former councilors and employees actively took part in the celebrations along with Municipality Executive Officer Atanu Kumar Samant. Several other events have been planned for the day.Similarly, Swayat Shasan Dibas was also observed in other municipalities and NACs across the State.
