Bhubaneswar: Thousands of devotees thronged to Old Town in capital city today to visit the ancient Lingaraj shrine to observe Shivaratri. Celebrated on the 13th or 14th day of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of Phalgun (February-March), devotees observe day-long fasting and offer of bael (wood apple) leaves to the God.

The fast is broken by devotees when "mahadeep" is raised atop the ancient shrine. Devotees anxiously wait for the crucial moment to arrive as the atmosphere turns sombre and serene.

This year, temple administration has finalised that the ritual is set to take place around 10 pm in the night. Keeping in view the huge number of devotees expected to throng the shrine, the Commissionerate police have beefed up security to prevent any untoward incident. CCTV cameras and barricades are in place for the same.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere rings with powerful chanting of Shiva mantras like Om Namah Shivaay (for eradicating fear), Om Namo Bhagwate Rudraay (to seek Lord Shiva's blessings) and Mahamrityunjay mantra (to increase longevity).
