Bhubaneswar: Activists of the Left parties and their trade union wings today staged a protest at the Master Canteen Square in the Odisha capital against yesterday's brutal attack on students by masked goons at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi.

The protestors carrying placards and banners describing the brutal attack on students as an act of Fascist forces shouted slogans condemning the attack.

The protestors termed it as an act of the goons of RSS and AVBP.

"Yesterday a terribly unfortunate incident has happened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. JNU is considered as the most prestigious university in India. RSS and ABVP goons attempted to kill it's students' union president Aishe Ghosh, a young woman. Street lights were switched off and men in masks wielding iron rods and stones attacked the students in their hostels but the police did not bother to act. Even professors of the varsity have not been spared by the attackers. We appeal all sections of the public who believe in democracy to condemn this fascist attack," said senior CPI(M) leader Janardan Pati speaking to newsmen.

"We strongly condemn the attack and violence on students at the JNU sponsored by the Central government. They have attacked the students, the teachers, the country's Home Minister Amit Shah is behind this attack. Shah should immediately step down and the government should order an independent inquiry and take stern action against the culprits," said senior CPI leader Rama Krushna Panda.
