Sambalpur: 'Lagna' (propitious moment) for offering 'Nabanna' (new rice) to Maa Samaleswari, the presiding deity of Sambalpur for this year has been fixed for September 3 between 10.05 AM to 10.20 AM.
Like every other year, the Brahma Mandap Pandit Mahasabha here, on the day following Janmastami i.e yesterday fixed the 'Lagna' for offering 'Nabanna' to the deity, marking the beginning of western Odisha's mass agrarian festival Nuakhai.
After fixing of the 'Lagna' the Mahasabha members carried the 'Lagnapatra'(the scroll with the propitious moment written on it) to the Maa Samaleswari temple in a procession to the beats of drums and sound of cymbals. The 'Lagnapatra' was later handed over to the deity.
It is only after 'Nabanna' is offered to Maa Samaleswari, other Gods and Goddesses are offered the same.
The festival is observed in this part of the State to welcome the new paddy crop.
Nuakhai, celebrated for ages in western Odisha is similar to what Onam is to Kerala, Bihu to Assam and Baishakhi to Punjab.
The festival is celebrated with great fervour in the districts of Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda and Boudh.
