Bhubaneswar: While Odisha Police played a major role in clearance of debris in the affected districts after the landfall of extremely severe cyclonic storm FANI, it is meanwhile supporting the State Administration in proper transportation and distribution of relief materials.

DGP RP Sharma today informed that soon after the landfall the Odisha Police along with ODRAF, NDRF and Odisha Fire Services started clearance of the roads and within two days traffic were resumed on the major and arterial roads along with roads connecting small towns and rural areas.

Meanwhile, adequate police escort is being provided for the transportation of relief materials and other products, including diesel, water tankers and food items, he added.

Sharma further informed that police patrolling has been intensified in the affected districts as, because of natural shortage of many essential items, people are staging road blockades and agitations at some places. Police is trying to pacify them and maintain law and order.

People are being asked to have patience as after such a menace providing food materials to people is underway on a war-footing. People are also cooperating which will help to bring back the situation to normal soon.

Additional vehicles have been provided to police stations in affected areas. Besides, additional police personnel along with armed police have also been deployed to assist in distribution of relief materials, he added.

The DGP further informed that as the communication system has been affected due to damage to mobile towers at many places, the VHF network of police has been the main channel of communication for the last three days. The police stations in affected districts are in contact through the VHF network so efforts are also underway to repair the damaged towers soon.

Even houses of police personnel have been damaged at Reserve Line in Puri. The residence of Puri SP, old police stations in the affected districts and the 7th Battalion campus have faced the wrath of FANI. An assessment of the damage done to police buildings is also being done, said Sharma.
