Khurda Dist Braces For Approaching Cyclone Amphan, Initiates Evacuation Process

Khurda: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by surface wind between 45-55 kmph in Khurda district on May 19 and 20 in the view of Cyclone Amphan. Bracing for the impact, the district administration has initiated its preparation.

Khurda Collector Sitanshu Kumar Rout informed the update. He said, “We had a discussion with BDOs and Tehsildars over video conference and begun the preparation. 855 cyclone shelters have been identified and a Nodal Officer has been assigned to it. As per Odisha Government’s guidelines, those housed in it will be provided with drinking water and food.”

Rout said that 86,000 people have been identified who stay in low-lying areas or have kutcha houses. The evacuation will begin today afternoon. He also said that two ODRAF teams have been mobilised in the district.
