Keonjhar: The following few lines - You will look even smarter in helmet... Life is precious...save it ... "Shaan Se Pahno Helmet" - and the accompanying images on the official twitter handle of Keonjhar SP to spread a message on road safety through Bollywood celebrities has received good response online and on field alike.

As per Keonjhar SP Jai Narayan Pankaj, motorcyclists make up around 35 to 40 percent of road accident victims and fatalities in State. The District Police is conducting various drives to reduce the fatalities and in past it had started a Good Samaritan campaign where anyone who helps take an accident victim to hospital was rewarded with Rs 2000.

Besides, fines are being collected from defaulters for enforcement of the traffic rules. However, 50 per cent people are keeping helmets in fear of police but are not wearing it. Mostly the youngsters complain that wearing helmet hampers their looks or style. After trying all the traditional methods to create road safety awareness, the Keonjhar police came up with this unique idea, said the SP.

"Youths are keeping the helmet but are not using it as it may hamper their style or looks, therefore photos of some Bollywood celebrities were available where they are using helmet and they look even better. The message behind the tweet is that by wearing helmet the youngsters will not only look smart but also remain safe," said Pankaj.

The message has received good response and gradually more people are using helmet. Though change will not come overnight the people have now become more safety concerned, he added.
