Kalahandi Maharaja Udit Pratap Deo Passes Away

Bhubaneswar: Udit Pratap Deo, the 32nd Maharaja of Kalahandi, passed away at the age of 71 while undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness at a private hospital here on Monday.

Deo is survived by his wife Padma Manjari Devi, son Anant Pratap Deo and daughter Maharajkumari Shree Manjari Devi who is married to Rajkumar Anant Vijay Singh of Churhat.

Reportedly, his body will be transported to his hometown Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district for his last rites.

Born on August 21, 1948, Deo was the eldest son of the last ruling king of the erstwhile princely state of Kalahandi, Pratap Keshari Deo. He had been coronated the Maharaja of Kalahandi on October 8, 2001.

Deo had held the post of Junagarh MLA from March 6, 1974 to April 30, 1977 on a Swatantra Party ticket. Later on March 19, 2014, he along with his wife Padma Manjari Devi had joined the BJP.
