Khurda: A herd of elephants have taken over a farmhouse of late Chief Minister Janaki Ballabh Patnaik situated near Rameswar area at Tangi here. By Wednesday they had caused widespread damage to the crop and injured the caretaker.

The 23-member herd contains adult and sub-adult tuskers who mostly reside near the Chitrakut hills near Nirakarpur of Khurda district. However, recently in search of food they migrated to the said farmhouse.

They have caused quite a scare with damaging the crops. One of the tuskers knocked the caretaker Pankaj Biswal giving his spinal injuries. He is currently under treatment.

The Forest Department officials opined that with crops in fields it would not be possible to scare away the jumbos. However, necessary compensation will be paid to whoever suffers damage of any kind.
