Keonjhar: Tension and panic gripped the district in the chilly winter morning today after a herd of as many as eight elephants entered a mango orchard in front of Champua Jhumpura block office.

While forest personnel launched an operation to drive away the pachyderms, locals burned tyres in anger as the jumbos were too close to their village. According to reports, the elephants had also damaged the wall of a school and ran amok in several business establishments.

Forest personnel and some villagers also sat guarding the forest in order to prevent anymore elephants from wandering into the villages and running wild into human habitation.
