Jharsuguda: The Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda has recorded a decline of 18 per cent in passengers movement in the month of July, informed Airport Director Sudesh Kumar Chouhan on Saturday.
In comparison to over 19,000 passengers in June, 2019, around 16,000 passengers travelled through Jharsuguda Airport in the month of July this year.
On an average, over 525 passengers transit through Jharsuguda Airport. So far over 59,000 passengers have travelled to various destinations served by Spicejet and Alliance Air from Jharsuguda.
Chouhan stated that a negative growth in passenger movement is a normal feature during the rainy season as per trend available in aviation sector. The other reason could be the withdrawal of Delhi-Jharsuguda-Delhi flight which is Boeing 737-800 having a capacity of 189 passengers, on each Monday.
The inclement weather at Jharsuguda Airport also contributed to some extent, he added.
Recently Airports Authority of India (AAI) has upgraded the navigational infrastructure by commissioning DVOR & DME. Very recently SpiceJet has been permitted by the DGCA to use it.
Precisely it shall reduce minima to 2100 metre for Boeing 737 and 1500 metre for Q-400 aircraft from 5000 metre earlier. So it shall reduce diversion or cancellation of flights due weather at Jharsuguda, stated Chouhan.
