Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today announced that its office bearers along with people of the district will register criminal cases at all police stations and outposts against the district's Superintendent of Police (SP) Charan Singh Meena on October 26.

The saffron party will be registering cases against the Jajpur SP in connection with his statements on the alleged suicide of Smitarani Biswal, Village Level Worker (VLW) and in-charge Panchayat Extension Officer of Haridaspur gram panchayat.

"BJP Jajpur district unit has decided that on October 26 its office bearers along with members of the public will register criminal cases against Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena at all police stations and outposts," said BJP Jajpur district unit president Goutam Ray addressing a press meet at the BJP State headquarters here.

"If the law is the same for all; if the same law is applicable to us then why criminal proceeding shouldn’t be initiated against the SP for his offensive behaviour and unsavoury remarks? Why shouldn't he be punished for his acts? The government has to answer this," he pointed out.

On the other hand the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in its reaction to the BJP's announcement said that the matter should not be politicized and the law will take its own course.

"This is a legal matter. No one is above law; this has been proved time and again during the reign of this government in many cases. This has nothing to do with some people doing politics over it. I shouldn't comment and this shouldn't be politicized," stated Samir Ranjan Das, senior BJD leader and Minister of School and Mass Education.

On last Saturday Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena addressing a press meet had said that prima facie evidence has revealed that Smitarani had an extramarital affair with Rupesh Bhadra, the husband of Sarpanch Madhusmita.

Meena had also told that Smitarani was over-possessive and had coerced Rupesh to leave his wife and stay with her.

The SP said that Smitarani and Rupesh had some minor argument in this regard earlier and on the fateful day (October 16), when Smitarani had gone to attend a lunch at the former's guest house; she had again raised the issue. However, instead of counselling her, Rupesh said that he can't leave his wife and challenged Smitarani to take any step possible. While Rupesh and his four friends were busy preparing meals, Smitarani had gone to the first floor of the guesthouse to freshen up. Later, she was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the guesthouse.
