Jajpur: A 12-hour bandh for the district has been declared by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) workers on Monday.

The workers picketed since early morning and burned tyres to block main roads. They also protested outside Jajpur Collector’s office and other Government offices. Entry to courts has also been blocked.

The strike’s effect was felt across 10 blocks and two municipalities.

The dawn-to-dusk bandh has become a major hindrance for the transportation in the district. Public transport was severely affected as buses lay idle in the bus stand sheds

Schools, colleges, shops, and commercial establishments remained closed. Government and private-sector workers alike were not allowed to go to their respective offices.

The police have made elaborate security arrangements to maintain the law and order situation during this time.

The mysterious death of Village Level Worker (VLW) Smitarani Biswal on September 17 was a puzzle till the Police arrested the local Sarpanch's husband for abetment of suicide two days later. Reportedly, the deceased had an extramarital affair with Sarpanch Madhusmita Bhadra's husband Rupesh Bhadra. She used to coerce Rupesh to abandon his wife. On the fateful day, Rupesh refused her suggestion and challenged Smitarani to take any step possible. In the heat of the moment, she went to the restroom and committed suicide by hanging herself.
