Cuttack: Commissionerate Police on early Saturday busted an illegal firecracker unit at Trilochanpur and Mahajanpur under Jagatpur Police limits and seized firecrackers of about 50 Lakh. Twelve people were arrested in this matter.

A team containing 20 senior Police officers and four platoons of force conducted the raid at 4.30 am, said police sources.

The illegal firecracker unit also contained a huge cache of explosive material for firecracker manufacturing. There were several 25 kg bags of Potassium Nitrate, gunpowder, and iron powder, said police sources. The source of these materials is yet to be ascertained. Twelve firecracker sellers have been arrested and are being interrogated in this matter. They reportedly do not possess the requisite license for firecracker making or selling.

On this note, Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh said, "We will continue raids on unlicensed firecracker building units frequently before Diwali. No action will be taken against those who possess proper licence."

However, he denied having ascertained the source of the explosive materials seized today.
