Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of farmers who arrived in Bhubaneswar today to pressurise the government to fulfill their long-standing demands of 'price, pension and prestige' were arrested on charges of creating an economic barrier in the city.

The farmers, under the banner of Naba Nirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS), had planned to block the National Highways and other connecting roads to Bhubaneswar.

Police force had been deployed at sensitive places in and around the city. Subsequently, farmers staging road blockade at Master Canteen Square and also at various other places were arrested.

With the Budget Session of Odisha Assembly underway, the farmers have been demanding to announce provisions for them in the budget or they will intensify their agitation.

Reportedly, they have been demanding a security allowance of Rs 5000 per month for nearly 36 lakh farmers of the State with an annual budget allocation of Rs 21,600 crore.
