Balasore: In yet another jolt to humanity, a 68-year-old was beaten and tied to a tree for five hours for not being able to pay Rs 540 as rent of a tractor.

The incident has occured at Basudebpur village in Kurunta gram panchayat under Khaira police limits of Balasore district.

Reportedly, the victim identified as Dibakar Barik of Kaliha village had, four months back, borrowed a tractor on rent from Abhaya Jena of Basudebpur for agriculture purpose.

Barik had to pay Rs 540 as unpaid rent to Jena for the above purpose. Jena had repeatedly asked Barik to pay the said amount and had also beaten him twice or thrice after the latter expressed his inability to pay.

Yesterday, Barik was passing through Abhaya's village when he attacked him with a wooden plank and later tied him to a tree for five hours.

On getting information, police rescued Barik and has detained Jena. A probe in the matter has also been initiated, said sources.
