Sambalpur: An incident of human sacrifice has come to light from Hitasara village under Naktideula police limits after a man confessed on Friday that he had killed his wife as a sacrifice to appease the Gods.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sulochana Sethi (37). Meanwhile, her husband Chagala Sethi (40) has been held by the cops for interrogation.

According to sources, the couple used to get into heated arguments frequently and he even tortured her at times. Chagala, who used to practice black magic and witchcraft in his backyard, also troubled villagers via his rituals and caused them harm, revealed the couple’s 14-year-old daughter Sanjukta and 11-year-old son Baikuntha.

Reportedly, Chagala hacked Sulochana to death on Tuesday night when she was fast asleep and then dumped her body in a field one kilometer away from the house. He then took her blood and offered it to appease the Gods.

On Wednesday morning, the villagers began searching for Sulochana and found her decomposed body after following a foul smell. Panic and tension gripped the village as the cops reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.

Soon after the incident, Sulochana’s brother filed a complaint following which Chagala was held for interrogation. On Friday, he confessed that he had committed the crime in order to gain more knowledge on witchcraft and sorcery.

The cops have arrested Chagala and have seized the weapon of offence and house. Meanwhile, further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
