HIV Patient’s Body Left Unattended At Burla VIMSAR For More Than 12 Hours

04 November 2019

Sambalpur: Apathy is the word that defines what happened to the body of a man who died in VIMSAR, Burla and was left unattended for more than 12 hours.

The unidentified man was HIV+ and was brought to the hospital on October 23 and left there by his family. He was admitted to the Medicine Ward, Unit 2 owing to a tumour in his right eye. He was operated upon the next day, i.e. October 24 and brought back to his bed in Medicine Ward, said sources.

However, he passed away at about 11 am yesterday and the hospital staff left his body unattended and did not shift the body to a mortuary. The body was left forgotten on the hospital bed he died.

The hospital administration were unreachable, whereas Burla Police Station Inspector In-Charge (IIC) Bibhuti Bhusan confirmed that he has been able to contact the deceased’s family and they were on their way to pick up the body.

However, the question that arises here is whether the hospital staff’s action was due to gross negligence or due to lack of awareness for HIV.
