Heavy Rains Hit Odisha, Water-Logging Affects Normal Life

Bhubaneswar: Due to the low pressure over north Odisha and neighbourhood on Saturday, heavy rainfall occurred in different districts. As per the rainfall recorded at 8.30 am on Sunday, Sambalpur received average rainfall of 113.2 mm, Baragarh 95.2 mm and Deogarh 67.1 mm.

Two Blocks in Sambalpur district have recorded rainfall of more than 200 mm i.e. Jujumura – 231.6 mm and Maneswar – 227.2 mm. 9 Blocks have recorded rainfall between 100 and 200 mm.

As a result of heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall, water logging situation was experienced at some places Sambalpur municipal area and Dhankauda Block. About 150 people of Bhoitikra village of Dhankauda block were shifted to Babubandh UP School and 100 people in Sambalpur municipal area to nearby club house.

Dry food and cooked food were provided to the people in the relief centres. The evacuated people have returned to them home in the after the water receded. Many houses in the district have been damaged due to heavy rain. The District Administration has been asked to assess the damages immediately.

Due to heavy rainfall, about 120 villages under 4 Blocks in Bargarh districts (Ambabhona, Attabira, Bargarh, Bhatli) have been affected. As per preliminary estimation, about 536 (Fully-3, Severely-3, Partially Kutcha-527) houses have been damaged. Some low lying areas in Bargarh ULB experienced water logging. However, the situation has improved as the rainfall has mostly stopped.

As reported by the Collector, Subarnapur, 3 wards of Binka NAC under was affected.Three families were shifted to nearby club and were provided with food. They have since returned to their home after the situation improved. Road from Birmaharajpur to Rairakholwas cut off at BauriJore (down Bridge) due to over topping of water. The connectivity has since been restored.

Similarly, some water logging situation occurred in low lying areas of Anandpur NAC and Ghasipura Block area of Keonjhar district. Dewatering was done by Fire personnel in water logging areas at Padmapur ofAnandpur ULB. Seven7 persons of Ghasipura Block area and 2 families of Anandpur ULB wereshifted to safe buildings. One breach has occurred in the canal at Baladuan, Anadpur affecting some cultivated area.

River Baitarani at Akhuapada (Jajpur district) and River Vamsadhara at Kashinagar (Gajapati district) which had crossed the danager mark have in the meantime receded. All other major rivers are also flowing below danger level.

Boat Capsize in River Brahmani, Dhenkanal

A boat accident occurred in River Brahmani on Saturday at about 7.30 PM. Nine persons including two boatmen while proceeding from Khadaga-Prasad Ferry Ghat underOdapada block to Kundandeipur of Parjang block through a Fishing boat got drowned in the mid river. Five of them including two boatmen have been rescued and got well after brief treatment. Other four persons are missing.

Three Fire teams and one ODRAF team were immediately deployed for the search and rescue operation. The diver team of NDRF has also joined the search operation which is still continuing.
