Kendrapada: While mythological women are kept on a pedestal and worshiped in India, the real women face hardships that have no bounds. In a heart-wrenching incident, a charred woman named her in-laws especially her mother-in-law and three other sisters-in-laws of burning her alive in Tikhiri Panchayat under Marshaghai police limits here today morning.

Bharati Swain of Balisuan village was allegedly set on fire today morning by the four in-laws and had sustained 80 per cent burns on her body. She was rushed to Kendrapada Medical for treatment and was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, when her condition worsened. However, she succumbed to her injuries.

The relatives of the victim alleged that her in-laws had been torturing her demanding dowry and when the demand was not met, they set her on fire.

On her deathbed, Bharati’s last words were, “My husband Nirmal Swain was not present in the house, when my mother-in-law and three sisters-in-law (‘Nananda’) committed the crime. They tied my hands, poured kerosene over me and burned me alive. My father-in-law was also present in the house but he did not object to anything." This dying statement has sent shockwaves in the State and only reflects the sorry state of woman in our country.

Meanwhile, police have detained the four accused for interrogation and have begun an investigation into the incident, stated reports.
