Bhubaneswar: The Health Department has not been successful in testing samples of 'Litchi' as the fruit has vanished from Odisha markets. Health and Family Welfare Minister Nabakishore Das said that the testing will continue as soon as the fruit is available in the market.

"My Department is very serious and vigilant about the issue. Bihar's encephalitis deaths have been linked to consumption of Litchis. We will conduct the tests when the fruit is available in the market," he said.

The deaths of children in Bihar, almost all of them malnourished, have raised a larger question over how the fruit should be eaten and the ways in which it is harmful to the body.

Following the outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar, Odisha Health Minister ordered laboratory test of litchi fruit being sold in the markets. The minister had asked the Food Safety Commissioner to collect and test samples of litchi being sold in the market.
