Puri: Seven months after an unidentified headless body of woman passenger was recovered from the toilet of Gunupur-Puri passenger train, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested her husband from Kantabania village under Mangalpur police limits of Jajpur district.

Briefing mediapersons, GRP OIC SK Bahinipati, said, the deceased has been identified as Gitanjali Mallick. Her husband Kapil Mallick had brought her to Puri on pretext of taking her to Pune and committed the crime.

Kapil had brought the weapon of offence with him and after murdering Gitanjali in the train toilet disfigured her face in order to hide her identity. He even severed her head and threw it near Delang railway station.

From there, Kapil went to Bhubaneswar and later Pune where he was working and stayed there for six months. After returning to his village, the family members of the girl started enquiring about her whereabouts and had also lodged a complaint at Mangalpur police station after which the incident came to light.

While Bahinipati said probe is ongoing to find the exact reason behind the crime, the accused husband Kapil said he killed Gitanjali as she had been torturing him and his family for the last eight years. He alleged that despite asking for divorce, she was not leaving him and regularly beat her in-laws through her seven brothers.

Kapil further said, Gitanjali regularly pestered him to take her to Pune, where he was working, and her brothers had also threatened him to do so. Not able to bear the torture, Kapil had decided to get rid of her and on June 19, 2018 left his village with her in a bus to Puri.

From there they boarded the train and Kapil got the chance to commit the crime as the coach was almost empty. He murdered her when Gitanjali went to the toilet to relieve herself. Meanwhile, Kapil has been booked under various sections of IPC.
