Kandhamal: A day prior to second phase polling in Kandhamal parliamentary constituency a hardcore Maoist identified as Bharat Kanhar surrendered before SP Prateek Singh on Tuesday.

Reportedly, Bharat alias Rakesh had joined the Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) Division of CPI Maoist in March 2018 and working as a party member. Government had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

He has been involved in several cases including the Gadimaska Camp recovery on October 2, 2018, exchange of fire at Gagarapatta on November 15, 2018, killing of Rabindra Mallik and burning of a vehicle on his presence at Sudrukumpa January 6, 2019.

Bharat decided to return to mainstream of the society after he found the organisation is no longer following the ideologies and values that had motivated him to join it. He found the senior leaders self-centred and oppresive.

He will be provided financial assistance under the Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of Odisha Government. Besides, he will get assistance to build a house, pursue studies and vocational training in a trade of his choice.
