New Delhi: Addressing BJD’s “Krushak Adhikar Samabesh” at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium today, BJD supremo-cum-Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reiterated his demand for financial autonomy and implementation of Swaminathan Commission Report soon for the rights and interests of farmers.

Taking a dig at the BJP-led Centre, he burst, “For the rights of the farmers, we are all united here. Several times I have requested the Centre to hike the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy. Our Assembly delegation has also tried to meet the Central Government. But nothing materialized for which you (farmers) have to come over to Delhi.”

He lambasted, “BJP after coming to power has forgotten the promise given to the farmers in its manifesto during the election. It is the responsibility of the Centre to fix the minimum support price of the food grains. It is also the responsibility of the Centre to implement the Swaminathan Commission Report. But the Centre can’t escape from its responsibility.”

“Farmer is the soul of the Indian economy. Odisha Government’s KALIA scheme for the farmers is the best of all. Recently I had demanded for financial autonomy for the farmers. Had there been our financial autonomy, our farmers wouldn't have come to Delhi. BJD has been fighting for the rights of farmers and will continue to do so," he averred.

Lampooning the BJP overtly, Naveen Patnaik quipped, “As you can see, we make promises and we keep those promises.”
