Bhubaneswar: Out of the total 54,298 schools functioning under the School and Mass Education (S and ME ) Department in Odisha, 441 do not have a toilet for girl students. Among the 30 districts, the Koraput district ranks lowest with 123 schools which do not have a toilet for female students. The figures came to forefront during the Question Hour of the Assembly session on Wednesday.
Responding to a question raised by Koraput MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Minister Padmanabh Behera said presented the status of toilets in State Government-run schools in Odisha. According to the data, 49 schools in Jajpur district, 45 in Puri, 37 schools each in Cuttack and Nayagarh, 34 in Bhadrak and 33 schools in Kalahandi district do not have a toilet for girls.
On the other hand, all the schools in 11 districts - Angul, Boudh, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Khurda, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Rayagada, Sambalpur and Sundergarh, have toilet facility for girl students. All total, 53,763 schools in Odisha have toilet for girls, the data revealed.
In Odisha, 1,485 schools do not have toilets for boys. In Bargarh - 268, Keonjhar - 132, Koraput - 151, Nayagarh - 103 and Sambalpur - 215 schools do not have boys toilet. Behera, who was speaking in favour of S and ME Minister Sameer Das, said, "Low-cost toilets or temporary toilets have been built in those schools which do not have permanent toilet complex.
