Berhampur: A family of Badakhandi village under Hinjili block has been ostracized just because they refused to follow the village kangaroo court’s diktat.

One Mamata is the youngest daughter of Nadi Bhagwan and Nadi Rajeshwari. She works as a teacher at Laxmipur Government Girl’s High School, local sources said. Due to some tiff with her husband, Mamta was back at her maternal home and was living with her parents.

But the village committee found this extremely objectionable. On July 5 reportedly, the committee ordered Mamata to quit her lucrative Government and go back to her husband. He parents were also asked to pay up Rs 5500 as fine. Their lands were also allegedly forcefully taken and they were not allowed to cultivate.

As the family refused, they were ostracized from the village. Even water and electricity connections were cut-off. A village crier is seen announcing in the village asking villagers to not keep any contact with the Nadi family.

In a heart-wrenching video, the parents are seen requesting Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Ganjam Collector and even Badakhandi villagers to hear out their plea and help them out. The couple uploaded the video on social media.

The couple also says that they were threatened and with no food or water, they were forced to leave their home and are now staying with their daughter in Gajapati district. They appeal, “We simply want to leave in peace.”
