Parlakhemundi: Adding another feather to her cap, Gajapati SP Sara Sharma facilitated a milk parlour for transgenders. It was inaugurated today by Parlakhemundi MLA Narayan Rao.
The milk parlour has been put up near the main hospital and will dole out milk, curd, hot water and other necessities for patients and their caretakers. A total of eight transgenders will man the parlour for 24-hours and will work in shifts.
Briefing the media, Sharma accepted that it took her a while to understand the third gender’s plight. She said, “The thought of making them financially independent struck me and then sought help from people to set up the milk parlour.”
The local MLA donated Rs 3 lakh and the MP donated Rs 2 lakh from their respective funds. With further help and support of the public, the parlour was set-up.
The new entrepreneurs profusely thanked SP Sara Sharma, MLA Rao and others who lent a helping hand to them to be a part of the mainstream society.
