Bhubaneswar: Former Artha Tatwa chief Pradeep Sethy attempted suicide inside Jharpada jail here yesterday. In a critical condition, he has been put under observation at the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

Sethy had an argument with a jail official yesterday, said Jailor of Jharpada Jail Subhakanta Mishra. He managed to sneak in a piece of electric wire of an inverter inside a toilet and attempted suicide. Jail officials had to break in the door to rescue him. He was immediately shifted to the psychiatric ward of the SCB and is currently under observation. He is deemed to be out of danger.

Sethy had been lodged in Jharpada Jail since 2017 after a Special CBI court in Bhubaneswar has awarded seven-year imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the crime of committing fraud and deceiving investors.

Briefing on the case, Jailor of Jharpada Jail said that Sethy had been mentally disturbed for a while and that he was undergoing treatment for the same since last three years. He added, “Sethy had a habit of causing self-harm so we were careful. We rescued him before he could inflict any serious harm on himself.”

As a precautionary measure, a warder will be given the special duty of keeping an eye on Sethy.
