Bhubaneswar: The Civil Defence Day was celebrated today at the Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy at Baramunda here.
Present at the event were Fire Service Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Roy, Fire Service Inspector General of Police Asheet Kumar Tripathy, and District Magistrate and Controller Sitansu Kumar Rout.
The event entailed inspection of parade by the chief guest, ceremonial address, distribution of prizes to successful candidates and then a demonstration of response to disaster and survival skills. The guests highly appreciated the active participation of over Civil Defence volunteers during the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani.
Several recruits who had completed their training showed demo of their skills, such as disaster response, air raid precautions, safety against earthquake and lightning. The recruits were trained to not only create awareness and but also train people so that in case of emergency they will be able to help themselves and people around them.
Briefing the media, DGP Roy said, “My hearty wishes to all on Civil Defence Day, and hope that the Fire Service personnel and the Home guards continue with their commendable work in future. Not just in Odisha but homeguards and fire service are known to provide service during emergency or natural calamities which have hit other states. As in Police department, modernization is underway for the Homeguard and Fire Services Department. We expect it to grow and do great work in service to the society.”
Civil Defence Day is celebrated on 6th December every year to make aware of the citizens and highlight the importance of Civil Defence. The civil defence provides protection to the civilian population during a crisis.
