Female Polling Officer Shot Dead By Maoists In Odisha's Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar: A polling officer was gunned down by Maoists in Kandhamal district today afternoon. The deceased official, Sanjukta Digal was a Gram Rozgar Sevak and was designated as a 'Poll Supervisor' at Phulbani.

The incident occurred at Gochapada when Digal's polling party was retreating following a landmine blast at Barala village under Gochapada police limits.

The Maosists fired indiscriminately from the woods when the vehicle was returning back. Digal received a bullet on her head and was killed on the spot.

The rest of the staffers managed to save their lives and rush back to the base camp. A pall of gloom descended in the area following the death of the polling official. More reports are awaited.

The incident took place few hours after Maoists torched a vehicle which was ferrying polling officials to Mungunipadar booth under Phiringia police limits in Kandhamal district.

However, the polling officials were unharmed in this incident as they were asked by the Maoists to move out of the vehicle before they set it afire.
