Kendrapada: A woman, Sajani Mallick survived a major crocodile attack in Rajkanika block of the district on Monday. The incident occurred when she had gone to the Baitarani River to clean utensils in the afternoon.

All of a sudden, Mallick, a farm worker, was attacked by a saltwater crocodile which emerged from the river. However, the brave woman held the trunk of a tree tightly and managed to defend herself.

A co-worker came to Mallick's rescue and fought with the crocodile. She struggled for about an hour after which the crocodile retreated into the water. The victim was rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Rajkanika, with injury on her left foot for treatment.

Crocodile attacks are rampant in the region which is very close to Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary located on banks of the Baitarani River. This is the second incident within two days. On Sunday, a youth survived a crocodile attack at Indupur village.
