Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate of Police on Tuesday arrested a gang five extortionists who were involved in a firing case which took place in the Capital City on March 16.
Two among the accused persons had shot a security guard, Gyanendra Mallick injuring him severely. He was shifted to a hospital on time and could survive.
Mallick was employed at a convention centre located on Tankapani Road on city outskirts.
Investigation revealed that the gang led-by Prabhas Jena of Cuttack Sadar was extorting money from Mallick’s employer Anup Bagoi.
On the fateful day, two of the gang members, Rabindra Baral and his accomplice showed up at the convention centre and shot at Mallick with a country made pistol.
The motive behind the crime was to terrorise Bagoi, the police said.
The police retrieved the weapon of offence, one live round of ammunition, a 7.65 mm empty cartridge, three motorcycles and six cell phones from the possession of the accused.
The were booked on multiple Sections of the IPC including attempt to murder and produced in a local court today. The court has remanded the five accused in judicial custody.
Meanwhile a manhunt has been launched to nab one accused who is still at large.
