Bhubaneswar: Former corporators of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today alleged irregularities by Aparajita Sarangi during her tenure as Commissioner of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Commissioner.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, a former Corporator Mahamaya Swain alleged that during 2007, BMC awarded a lighting contract to Bajaj Electricals flouting the norms. “The agreement was signed between BMC and Philips, however the contract went to Bajaj with an approval of the Corporation,” said Swain.

She added that there were irregularities in beautification of medians, land scaping infront of Raj Bhavan square, Kalinga Stadium, Acharya Vihar and Vani Vihar.

The corporators further alleged that the contract for installation of vending zones was overpriced during Sarangi’s tenure in BMC. “The contractor was charging Rs 17,000 while actual expenditure to erect vending zones was Rs 7,000.”

Speaking to OMMCOM NEWS on this matter, Sarangi said that when she quit Indian Administrative Services, the State Government gave her a clean chit. “The Government’s letter is a testimony to my integrity. I don’t have to say anything further,” she added.
