Balasore: An elderly farmer committed suicide allegedly over debt burden in Nuapur village of Soro tehsil early on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Gayadhar Jena (65), a mushroom farmer. His family members found him at his farm in the wee hours.

Reportedly, Jena had taken over Rs 1 lakh loan from a cooperative bank and several other people for mushroom cultivation. "After crop loss, he was in stress over repayment of loan", the FIR lodged by Jena's son mentions.

On intimation, Soro police reached the spot and recovered the body for post-mortem. Further probe into the matter is underway.
