Dhenkanal Shelter Home Shame: Maneka Gandhi Orders Inspection Of All Homes In Odisha

08 December 2018

Bhubaneswar: Expressing concern over the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls residing at the Dream Center (children's home) of Good News India (GNI) at Beltikri in Dhenkanal, the Union Minister of Women & Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, has asked the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to get all the homes in Odisha inspected immediately.

In a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Maneka stated that though the GNI is running such homes in Odisha for the past two years without registration under Juvenile Justice Act, the incident came to light when some of the girls residing at the Dhenkanal shelter home confided in the media and accused the shelter home in-charge Simanchal Nayak and NGO head Faiz Rehman of sexual abuse.

She further expressed her horror to learn the GNI is currently operating more than 25 such shelter homes in Odisha. Stating that the concerned authorities should assume moral responsibility for this incident, the Minister added that she has also asked her Secretary to conduct an inquiry into the case.
