Bhubaneswar: The structures in the vicinity of Lingaraj Temple which were deemed as illegal encroachments are being demolished today. This is part of the beautification drive for the temple being carried out in parallel with the drive at Puri to turn it into a prime heritage town.

The official crier urged people to leave the establishments to avoid any injury during the demolishing. The holders of these establishments were also given a prior notice to vacate the buildings.

JCB machines were engaged by the authorities for the demolition drive which began as per a prior notice. Police force has been deployed at the spot to avoid any untoward incident and public protest.

Previously, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) carried out a demolition drive at old buildings which have been declared unsafe in Old Town area on November 29. The protests were mild but with promises of shop allotment had dispersed the crowd.
