Puri: In a major move by the State Government and Puri’s civic authorities has finally demolished the iconic Biju Patnaik memorial from Puri Swargadwar as part of its development and renovation plans.
The move was made in the darkness of Wednesday night to avoid any kind of opposition or dissent from the public.
Few days back, a Rs 5-crore project was announced In a high-level meeting presided by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Lok Seva Bhawan where the modalities of the project were discussed.
The State Government decided to renovate and develop Swargadwara, the holy cremation ground at Puri, which suffered major damages in the severe cyclonic storm Fani which hit Odisha on May 3.
The project involves setting up state-of-the-art facilities for cremation and pall-bearers. Besides, all-weather cremation facilities will be set-up for the convenience of the public.Describing Swargdwara as a holy place of faith, the Chief Minister urged Odia people to join hands in its development.
The funds for the development project will be made available from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) and will be carried out with the assistance of Phoenix Foundation.
