20 May 2020

Bhubaneswar: We are dealing with Cyclone Amphan in the context of Covid-19, which is likely to be the part of the new normal. All the natural disasters in coming days, let it be cyclone or floods during monsoon, will be dealt in the context of COVID-19, said NDRF Director General SN Pradhan on Wednesday.

Pradhan informed that NDRF is keeping a close watch on Cyclone Amphan and clarified that duty of the agency doesn't get over after landfall of a cyclone but it is when the actual work starts. Recovery, restoration work starts in post-cyclonic situation so this is a long haul.

The NDRF has battalion headquarters in both Odisha and West Bengal. The Commandant of Odisha has set up camp at Balasore and that of West Bengal has set up camp at Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas district, which is in the path of the storm. NDRF has deployed 20 teams in Odisha and 19 in West Bengal. Two teams are on standby.

Meanwhile, as many as five lakh people in West Bengal and 1.5 lakh in Odisha have been evacuated as per the data submitted by the State governments.
