Cyclone FANI: EVMs Shifted From Strongroom In Gajapati

Gajapati: In anticipation of heavy rains due to Cyclone FANI, Gajapati district administration shifted the polled Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from strongroom Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati High School to Collector’s Office on Wednesday.

The process took place in the presence of Collector Anup Kumar Saha, three platoons of police force, and party agents. Saha informed that the step was taken as heavy rains could have as damaged the EVMs in the strongroom.

Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar had said on Wednesday, “Fani is going to take the form of extremely severe cyclonic storm in our State. As the EVMs are now stored in the strong rooms, it is now most significant to ensure the safe storing of the polled EVMs. Hence, we’re now examining the positions of the strongrooms. In the last 24 hours we have got the detailed report of the present positions of the strongrooms and its safety measures from all the 30 District Collectors. We have enquired about the need for shifting or further fortifying the strongrooms, specially with the steps of retrofitting and waterproofing them.”

“We have sent the proposals of all the District Collectors to the Election Commission. All the party candidates as well as all the parties in the fray have to be intimated. Whatever steps to be taken there, everything has to be brought to the notice of the parties and candidates in advance,” stated the Odisha CEO.

It is notable to mention here that the counting of votes is set to be done on May 23.
