Bhubaneswar: As Fani is predicted to take the most alarming form of extremely severe cyclonic storm in Odisha in the wake of the recently concluded four-phased simultaneous elections, Election Commission (EC) has now woke up to the occasion of ensuring safety and security of the polled EVMs already stored in the heavily guarded strongrooms of the respective districts since torrential rains and floods are very likely to play spoilsport.

Convening an urgent press meet today, Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Surendra Kumar said, “Fani is going to take the form of extremely severe cyclonic storm in our State. It is proceeding towards the coast of Odisha. Hence, it is now very important for us to take precautionary measures. Except 96 Patkura Assembly constituency, elections to all the 21 Lok Sabha and 146 Assembly constituencies have been finalized in the four phases.”

He also informed, “As the EVMs are now stored in the strong rooms, it is now most significant to ensure the safe storing of the polled EVMs. Hence, we’re now examining the positions of the strongrooms. In the last 24 hours we have got the detailed report of the present positions of the strongrooms and its safety measures from all the 30 District Collectors. We have enquired about the need for shifting or further fortifying the strongrooms, specially with the steps of retrofitting and waterproofing them.”

“We have sent the proposals of all the District Collectors to the Election Commission. It is because there is a strict rule for accessing the polled EVM strongrooms. All the party candidates as well as all the parties in the fray have to be intimated. Whatever steps to be taken there, everything has to be brought to the notice of the parties and candidates in advance,” stated the Odisha CEO.
